I saw an article the other day and I feel I have to share it. The article talked about how some species of sharks were going extinct. The reason for their big decrease in numbers? Finning.

Here is a video of what finning is:

In 2010 Hawaii was the first state to ban shark finning fully. This year President Obama signed the Shark Conservation Act. This act would require any sharks brought to U.S ports must have all fins attached.

In 2009 The Republic of Palau created the worlds first shark sanctuary. Their blog can be found here.  Their home page can be found here.

How can I as an individual stop shark finning?

A very good web page to visit is stopsharkfinning.net Not only do they have petitions, but this page lists restaurants to avoid who serve shark fins.

There is also a Face Book Group here.

If you are from the European Union-EU I would suggest writing your MEP. To find your countries MEP go Here.

Another way to help stop shark finning is to bring awareness to the subject. If more people understood how detrimental finning is to the shark species the quicker this practice can be stopped.

As we all know sharks are only one of the many species becoming endangered and extinct due to humans.
Here is the article I saw earlier this week. Are Sharks Becoming Extinct?
